3 Special Considerations When Choosing A Roofing Material For A Creole-Style Home

Brittany Howard

The Creole architectural style got its start in the 1700s in French-influenced New Orleans before spreading further through the southern states. The most distinctive features of the homes are the lower porch and upper balcony, which stretch across the entire front of the house. Ornate ironwork and banisters highlight these features and the homes often have additional ornamentation near the roof, which has a low-pitch or flat roof style.

If you have a Creole-style home and need roof repairs or a new roof entirely, there are a few flat roof considerations to keep in mind when choosing a material with your roofing contractors.

Waterproofing Needs

Flat style roofs aren't in fact flat but have a slight pitch to help drain off rainwater. But flat roofs in areas that receive frequent heavy rainfall, which includes much of the south, often have a little trouble draining off the water quickly. Standing water on the roof can gradually erode the roofing material and seep into your home, which can cause expensive water damage.

Metal roofing is one of the best roofing materials for assisting with water drainage on a flat roof. There are two main types of metal roofing: shingle-style or standing seam metal. The shingle style is laid fairly flat so that the water just slides down the slick surface of the material. Standing seam metal comes in planks that snap together to form an alternating pattern of vertical seams and valleys that help better carry off water.

Budget Constraints

Is budget your primary concern with your roofing repair or replacement project? Asphalt shingles are a budget-friendly alternative to metal roofing that will still help with the water drainage. Asphalt shingles are lightweight and relatively flat when installed so provide an easy route for the water to get into the gutter system.

Asphalt is low cost and fairly durable though heat damage is possible over time. If you live in an area with particularly brutal summers, you can simply call in a roofing contractor annual to check on your shingles and make repairs, where needed.

Low Visibility

What about more visually appealing roofing materials like wood, slate, or clay? Wood shingles are textured both individually and in how the shingles are laid. The shingles would help trap water on your roof and under the roofing, which is the opposite of what you want. Slate and clay tiles are both beautiful but also very expensive. And with the height of your home and the low slope of the roof, no one is going to be able to see all of that expensive beauty from the road.

Talking About Roofing Services

Hello, I'm Erica. Welcome to my site about roofing services. We moved into a home in the middle of a stormy country. Although the roof was nice when we moved in, the constant barrage of storms quickly changed its construction. The shingles flew off and flashing unwound until the roof looked awful and started to leak. At that point, we knew we needed to act fast. Luckily, with one call to a roofer, we scheduled the repairs needed to keep it in great shape, even through future storms. I will use this site to talk more about how our roof was repaired and storm proofed.
